I had to disengage from social media and online forums in order to minimize distractions.
People say, “You should have a Facebook group for your art or music”, but I retreated from Facebook to get away from the noise. Why would I give them more data? Why would I buy an ad? We already know it’s a scam. “Oh, it’s not a scam. I bought an ad and I got some Likes…” or “I bought an ad so I could reach everybody in my group…” People really put up with that kind of a scam? Not me. No thanks. I’d rather do direct mail marketing to strangers in certain demographics.
I like having a conversation. Human interaction is better than text interaction.
Should I post on Instagram? Maybe occasionally. Most are looking at my paintings on their phone or a small screen that’s smudged with fingerprints. Or in the sun. Or for 2 seconds. What kind of value does that have versus somebody in a gallery or space wanting to make a connection with a painting?
How much time do you spend on those services every day? Wouldn’t you be better off working on new paintings? Submitting to additional galleries? Making sounds and releasing them? I decided I’d rather make new paintings, new music, and new sounds. And, so, I had to disengage.
