Mark Rushton's Late February 2005 Developments

Hum & Drift has been delivered to iTunes and some other digital download services earlier this week. Expect to see this showing up as a commercial product in the next week to 10 days.

I may be providing a small set of pre-fab field recordings at the new Emerald City stage in Cedar Rapids on March 27th. Stay tuned as that develops. A couple tracks on a promo CD for the event may also happen.

I've been making some new pieces of music and field recordings lately, most of which have been going nowhere.

Expect new art store scans soon.

More airplay on SomaFM's Drone Zone for me recently, which means I've been played on XM Satellite Radio.

Mark Rushton Music In The Latest Boundoff.com Podcast

I have three pieces of music in the first issue of the Bound Off Short Story Podcast.

In order of appearance, the snippets of music are from my songs Free The Airwaves, This Other Road, and Post-Rock.

Free The Airwaves is available on my 2004 CD The Driver's Companion. You can buy a download of the song at iTunes.

I also read Tim O'Brien's short story, Another Round, did audio engineering, and mixed the podcast.

Bass player Jon Harnish and I did live soundscaping in Iowa City in September of 2005. It was quite a good session and we got a lot of material. I featured a track from one of these sessions in Podcast #6, which came out in early October of 2005.

The first track, what I'm calling "September Sky, Part 1", is very stark with long, drawn-out synth drones and sustained bass. The birds you'll hear were not live, but multi-tracked field recordings done by me. It's a little over 6 minutes long.

The second track, what I'm calling "September Sky, Part 2", starts off almost the same as Part 1, but the synth drones are speeded up and extra loops are added. A few minutes in to the 9 1/2 minute piece, I bring in and then out some multi-layered beats while Jon does his bass work.

Part 1 is a nice ambient start, but Part 2 really brings it along, especially towards the end. Also, if you're interested, everything was mixed and improvised live.
