June 2002 Update of Our Gardens
This year we've had a lot of rain, including a 10 day stretch in early June where we got just over 10 inches of rain in our gauge. It wasn't all at once. One day we got 4 inches of rain and the next week we had a day where had 5 inches of rain. It's also remained fairly cool or at least seasonable.
The front walk, which Ann worked on this year. She
planted petunias and impatiens. Unfortunately the rabbits ate most of the
impatiens so she replanted those areas with more petunias.

Below Left: Our once-tiny lilacs, viburnums, and burning
bushes have all grown up.
Below Right: All the herbs have been moved out and perennials and
wildflower/zinnia mix moved in.

Our new herb garden, or what constituted "Uncle Ed's
Garden" a while back. We transplanted all of our herbs back here,
along with more perennials (mostly daisies). This was a lot of work.
Mark had to endure another gas-powered sod cutter breaking down on-the-job, so
he ended up using a manual sod cutter - not fun!!! The ground was tilled
using a rented Mantis tiller from our local hardware store. The Mantis
made the tilling easy and is highly recommended.

Bottom Left: Behind the house - our new wall with more things
to plant (impatiens, petunias, and dead nettles)
Bottom Right: Our hosta garden has expanded! Now we have just a small
grass path on the north end of our house.

Potted flowers on our front doorstep...
