Our Gardens - April 20, 2002

This past week it's been nearly 90 degrees, but tomorrow we're expecting an inch of snow.  Go figure!

Today Mark finished the raised bed.  It's made from three 2"x6" cedar boards.  The corners were created by cedar 2x2s.  It took seventeen 40-pound bags of dirt to fill up.  We're doing a raised bed in order to stop the creeping charlie, crabgrass, and other weeds from invading.

Mark also rented a manual sod-cutter from the local hardware store to cut some grass out for part of the raised bed.  Since it had rained recently, he also cut out part of the new herb garden.  Using a manual sod-cutter is hard work, so only part of it got done (next time, he'll get the gas-powered sod-cutter, which was not available this weekend...) - but Mark was able to transfer some of the sod over to one of the old gardens.  This was heavily watered.  Eventually we'll add some grass seed.

The hostas are breaking out.

The perennials and a tulip (left) are growing - as are the herbs (right).
